Reflection: #4 (FINAL POST)                                                                 Date: January 10, 2024 The Semester is up and now is my final progress post for this project! I have done a lot since my last post. I have finished sewing my dress and made several side projects along with it! I got most of my research from a family friend and the dress pattern. The person who helped me has a lot of knowledge in sewing and showed me how to use the sewing machine and how to hem and sew pieces of fabric together. Something that went well during this time was creating and finishing my dress. Some challenges I encountered were when the thread got stuck in the machine, running out of thread, and sewing the curved parts of the dress. The major change I made was starting to work o...

Reflection: #3                                                                                                                              Date: November 26, 2023 Since my last post, I haven’t done anything physically. But I’ve gone to FABRICLAND to look for fabric, patterns, thread, etc. I got most of my research primarily from a family friend with much sewing knowledge. As well, I went online and searched how to read sewing patterns. I found this website explained it best; https://www.thecreativecurator.com/how-to-read-sewing-patterns/   Something that went well was that I now have most of the materials ...

Reflection: #2                                                                                                                   Date: November 13, 2023 Since my last post, I have made 2 scrunchies and part of a dress for my mannequin! Since my last post, I have learned how to stitch fabric together, how to make scrunchies, and how to properly finish a project. I completed my research through YouTube. The following video is what I followed: I followed the 2nd method Making the scrunchies went well, I finished both in one day. I was just concerned about the fabric not properly doing justice to the design. As well as I just improvised with the dres...

Reflection: #1                                                                                      Date: October 19, 2023 Part 1 Since my last post, I have started my sewing journey!  I have learned how to stitch fabric. In this project, I used the running baste stitch and the blanket stitch. I got my research from Homedit , this article was by Brittney Smart. https://www.homedit.com/how-to-sew/#Blanket%20Stitch It shows you different basic stitches and goes into detail about each one.  Something that went well, I finished a project. I got the idea from Maya about creating something to hold my needles. A challenge I faced was cutting the fabric. I believe that the scissors I’m using aren’t sharp enough....

Decision Time

Image
Hi, it’s me again! I have decided what I would like to do for my Genius Project… For my Genius Project, I have decided that I will become an “expert” on sewing. The goal that I hope to reach at the end of this semester is to make a dress from scratch. I realize that this might be far-fetched and difficult to reach but I would love to work my way up to it. My plan for the start is to sew basic stitches into a piece of fabric, then to make my own scrunchie or hair tie. Then I will start designing what I want the dress to look like by sketching and after that, I will start making it. Some potential challenges that stand in my way are having difficulty doing it by hand, finding the proper fabric, having no inspiration, and running out of time. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to facing these challenges head-on and showing you my progress! See you next time, Carmen
